What Americans believe about the hereafter
As we grow older questions of mortality become more relevant. When we were 25, we felt like the king of the world. At 65-70 not so much. Our longevity has given us the opportunity to experience more loss as well. These conditions beg the most philisphical questions that have perpexed humankind since the beginning of time. When we die where do we go? When a dear loved one passes are they gone forever? Or, will we meet our lost loved ones again when our time comes?
The Pew Research Center has done surveys on what Americans believe when it comes to such weighty questions.
- 73% believe in heaven
- 62% believe in hell
Of those who believe in neither heaven nor hell:
- 21% Believe our spirits live on
- 17% Believe in reincarnation
The rest believe nothing is beyond the curtain of death.
Lets take a quick look at what the Pew research discovered concerning what Americans felt about communication with loved ones who have gone before them. From another Pew study:
- 53% Believe that a dead family member has visited them in a dream or other form
Those same respondents shared experiences from the last 12 months.
- 34% have “felt the presence” of a dead relative
- 28% have told a dead relative about their life
- 15% have had a dead family member communicate with them
We will all find out someday.
What do you think?
What is waiting for us beyond this life?
