In the United States, gun ownership demographics reveal a diverse landscape shaped by various factors, including age, gender, and political leanings. A recent Gallup survey indicates that approximately 30% of American adults own at least one firearm.
Although men are more likely to own guns than women, the rate of female firearm ownership has been increasing in recent years—most notably among women who identify as Republican.
Comparing two Gallup data sets—one compiled from 2007-2012 and the most recent from 2019-2023—shows that gun ownership among Republican women increased significantly from 19% to 33%. During the same period, Independent women saw a 2% increase in ownership, while Democratic women experienced a 1% decline. Women as a group, regardless of identity, showed a 5% increase in gun ownership when comparing the 2 periods.
When looking at the same timeframes, firearm ownership by Republican men also showed an increase of 9%, from 38% to 47%.—43% of the men surveyed own at least one gun.
Based on the data in its entirety, the typical American gun owner is a conservative male between the ages of 50-64 who lives in a rural area of the South. The study made no distinction between legal and illeagle gun possesion.
