On October 3rd, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a recommendation for the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccination. Here is what the CDC website says about who should get the vaccine:
Everyone ages 6 months and older should get a 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine.
more:
The COVID-19 vaccine helps protect you from severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
The message emphasized that people over 65 should get vaccinated since they face a higher risk of serious illness.
For many, these recommendations are falling on deaf ears. Pew Research Center did a poll between October 21st and 27th asking 9,395 Americans if they intended to get the latest vaccine. 15% of those asked had already gotten the vaccine, 24% said they intend to—60% said that they “probably not get.”
When broken down by age group, here are the percentages of those who said probably not:
- 18/29—-62%
- 30/49—-66%
- 50/64—-62%
- 65+ ——45%
The most common reasons for not getting the vaccine, from the Pew report.
- Don’t think they need it
- Concerns about side effects
- Don’t get vaccines in general
More Democrats are being vaccinated than Republicans.
Senior citizens, who are at the greatest risk, are the most likely group to get vaccinated.
